PG Steel Shooter practices and matches introduce participants to the fun and excitement of Steel Challenge competitive steel shooting in a safe, low-cost, low-pressure, family-friendly format.

All levels of target shooters, from the first-time shooter to the seasoned competitor, are welcome and will find a challenge appropriate to their skill level.

Steel Challenge shooters can compete with a .22LR handgun or rifle, a centerfire handgun, or a pistol caliber rifle.

The targets are steel plates that are set out in an array of 5 steel plates. Steel targets are used to give shooters immediate visual and audible feedback. A Steel Challenge match will consist of 8 different arrays, known as ‘stages’.

The participant engages the target array in 5 timed ‘strings.’

The slowest string is discarded, and the stage score is the best 4 strings.

The initial investment required to participate in Steel Challenge is quite low compared to many other sports. Basic across-the-counter semi-auto .22LR firearms, with 5 magazines, a chamber flag and a gun case will be the entry point for most new competitors. .22LR ammunition is very reasonably priced. 

Safe competition is the primary feature of our sport:

• Eye and Ear protection is Mandatory for all participants and spectators.
• Centerfire handgun competitors are the only participants who require holsters. Rimfire firearms and pistol caliber rifles are usually carried in cases. They are brought to the shooting line in a gun case and are re-cased at the completion of the course of fire.
• Very limited movement. All shooting is done from a static position. (Ideal for shooters with mobility challenges)
• No age limit. With parental permission and supervision any young person, who can safely handle the firearms, may participate – at the Match Director’s discretion. We have participants from 8 years to seniors in their 70’s.
